Leadership Pre-Interview Reflection

Leadership Pre-Interview Reflection

The subject of my interview is a UNE graduate now working in a professional hospital setting. This individual has acted as a mentor for me since our first meeting. She has always been extremely supportive of my nursing journey and has been a steadfast resource to answer all of my questions and concerns about nursing. On occasion she has even helped me to study when I was struggling. When I first read the details of this assignment, I immediately thought of her. To note, she is an affable, kind, approachable person whom I strive to be like. She demonstrates great leadership qualities that have served her well in her post graduate residency. She is about one year out of school, and she has already excelled in her position. She is a leader in both informal and formals ways. She often orients new nurses to her floor, and frequently acts as a charge nurse. Other nurses come to her for counsel and she is always eager to lend a helping hand.

Through this interview, I am eager to learn of the challenges she faced after graduation. I would like to know how prepared she felt beginning her nurse residency, and whether there are things she would have liked to have known prior to the start of her job. I also want to hear her thoughts on the NCLEX and pick her brain about her study habits, what things worked, what did not, etc. I am excited to ask her advice and gain greater understanding of what it’s like to be a new nurse.
